Kurt Vonnegut's views into story structure are incredibly insightful and, I feel, should be taught alongside every curriculum that investigates how to write stories. Take a look at this great graph put together by Maya Eilam that exemplifies the different shapes a story can take.
It goes well with this video which shows not only the shapes in real time, but Mr. Vonnegut's dead-pan sense of humor.
